In a letter to Pfizer Inc., the company noted that its sales of Celebrex, a prescription anti-inflammatory painkiller, were expected to double in the next three years and that Pfizer’s sales of the drug would double by the end of next year.
“Celebrex is an important treatment for chronic pain, and we are pleased that it has been launched,” said Mike Lister, Pfizer’s chairman and chief executive. “We have been looking at options to reduce the cost of the drug and we are pleased that Celebrex is one of them.”
Pfizer, which sells the drug in the United States for more than $1 billion a year, said the pharmaceutical giant has taken a “recreational approach” to its Celebrex, which Pfizer has called “the gold standard in prescription pain relief.”
In its letter to Pfizer, the company said that Celebrex has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and that it should be used only as directed.
